Vitamin D deficieincy

Question

My DR.just found that I have low vitamin d 22. Eight or nine months of muscle aches, extreme fatigue, lots of tests no answers.Any connection? He has started me on 1,000 units of vitamin D. Thank you.

Answer

Great question.  There is some evidence that low Vitamin D levels can be associated with fairly nondescript muscle and joint pain. Remember that kids with severe vitamin D deficiency are the ones who develop rickets !!

In patients with inflammatory arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis, there are also some data suggesting that low vitamin D levels make the joints more inflamed, but this remains to be proven by a clinical trial (we are doing one here at Hopkins).
