Research Interests
Dr. Bingham’s research interests are to identify clinical and pathophysiologic disease phenotypes of inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and osteoarthritis (OA) to improve patient-centered care and health outcomes for people living with these diseases. His career has spanned from the bench to the bedside. His initial research was focused on laboratory-based studies evaluating basic mechanisms of inflammation. He then transitioned to a clinical-translational research focus with extensive experience in the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical trials of new therapies for RA, OA, and other autoimmune diseases. His most recent work has focused on improving the ways in which disease activity is measured. For more than 15 years, a major focus of his research has been better understanding the patient’s perspective of their disease experience and life impact, identifying and developing measures to reflect these aspects of health-related quality of life, piloting and validating patient-reported outcome measures in arthritis, and integrating this information into routine clinical care and clinical trials. He co-chairs the Technical Advisory Group for the international Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) group, which works to develop core sets of measures for use in clinical trials and observational research. He was a member of the international group that revised the classification criteria for RA, permitting the diagnosis of earlier disease to facilitate treatment with disease modifying agents and for recent updated vaccination guidelines for rheumatic diseases.
His current research focuses on defining clinical and biochemical disease phenotypes related to therapeutic responses in RA and OA, developing rational clinical trial designs to test new treatments, improved patient-reported outcomes and clinical outcome measures, and integrating precision medicine into clinical care.
